Case Studies: What are Case Studies?

Case Studies are...

The term itself can cause confusion.  It can relate to actual examples from real companies or it can relate to fictitious stories written to help students learn a topic.  The resources listed on this guide provide a mix of the two.

Definition

A case study presents an account of what happened to a business or industry over a number of years. It chronicles the events that managers had to deal with, such as changes in the competitive environment, and charts the managers' response, which usually involved changing the business- or corporate-level strategy. (Cengage Learning)

This guide will help you locate case studies; these can be found in books such as Exploring Corporate Strategy by Johnson & Scholes or in Databases such as Business Source Complete, ABI-Inform, Emerald and other resources that students and staff will find useful (especially the links to case clearinghouses and the sample cases). If you don't find what you need here, don't hesitate to ask for help.
