Note: you can suggest they do the exercises in pairs or individually

  • Give out a Harvard PASS training Manual to each student: these are available in the library – just ask (and some are also given on PASS leader training day)

Item 1: In text referencing:

  • Bring a book to demonstrate in-text referencing in the textbook.
  • Discuss the theory of in-text referencing so cover paraphrasing (putting information in your own words) and direct quotations (copying existing text and the use of inverted commas)
  • Students to do the In-text referencing exercise (you can suggest they pick one (only) example and do that or it will take too long)
  • Take any questions.

Item 2: Rules for order of full reference list at end of essay:

  • Go through the rules and show them on the website
  • Note: Explain that it is important that references are in alphabetic order of author surname
  • Explain what minimal capitalisation (1st letter of 1st word in capitals) and Maximum capitalisation (the 1st letter of all major words in capitals) mean and their applications (minimal capitalisation for Book titles, Website titles and Journals articles and maximum capitalisation for Journal names).
  • Take questions

Item 3: How to do a full reference for Books, Edited Books, Journals (online) and Websites:

  • Show them the templates for books on the Harvard website and go through it and explain it
  • Student now to do the Harvard reference exercise for a book (in manual) with one author (give 5 minutes)
  • Compare answer with correct answer (On the back of the Harvard PASS training manual and online) and correct answers
  • Student now to do the Harvard reference exercise for an edited book in Manual (show template on Harvard site and explain it first then give 5 minutes for exercise)
  • Compare answer with correct answer (On the back of the Harvard PASS training manual and online) and correct answers
  • Student now to do the Harvard reference exercise for an online Journal in Manual (show template on Harvard site and explain it first then give 5 minutes for exercise)
  • Compare answer with correct answer (On the back of the Harvard PASS training manual and online) and correct answers
  • Student now to do the Harvard reference exercise for a website in Manual (show template on Harvard site and explain it first then give 5 minutes for exercise) Compare answer with correct answer (On the back of the Harvard PASS training manual and online) and correct answers.
